Fun-A-Day 2016, day eight

Recently Eric the Red suggested I check out the East Coast Family’s “1-4-All-4-1” video from 1992 which features a bunch of acts on Michael Bivin’s (from Bell Biv Devoe) Biv 10 Records.  This video features about 15 acts with 2 groups of young kids doing hiphop/R&B in Another Bad Creation (ABC) and 1010.  1992 seemed to be a big year for these types of youth acts.  Kris Kross hit #1 for 9 weeks in 1992 with “Jump” and their album was certified 4x platinum.

Emma had not been familiar with ABC, so we watched a couple of their videos which she found fascinating.  Then we worked our way backwards and watched some New Edition videos.  Kids groups are weird, especially when they are straddling that strange place between cuteness and toughness.  In “Jump” one of them comes out saying “I’m the Mac and I’m bad give you something that you never had” but then a few lines later says he’s “A young lovable, huggable type of guy.”  In the video there are a couple points where there are a group of grown men dancing around a barrel fire while the Kris Kross guys rap;  it just feels a bit contrived.  But really the song is pretty good and actually has aged fairly well.  It’s still catchy and danceable.

Interesting note: To this day, Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly claims to always wear his pants backwards (as was the fashion trend Kris Kross were known for starting)
