There are songs that bind two people because they discover them together. And then there are songs that bind two people because they discover that they both loved the song already before they even met. That’s where Alannah Myles’ “Black Velvet” resides for Emma and myself.
When this song came out I was pretty deep into a mix of Beastie Boys, Poison, Bon Jovi, MC Hammer, etc. Not sure how or why this song resonated with me, but it slow bluesy music and sweet vocals really got into my brain. Fast forward a couple decades and well into our relationship this song came on the radio and Emma declared her undying love for the song as well. Perfect.
The video is a good mix of sexy and cool. Alannah looks great and exudes a tough, confident vibe, though Emma and I noticed that throughout most of the video she is leaning against something – the doorframe, amps, her bandmates. The wearing of the chaps in the video seems a bit cheesy now but certainly was sexy and badass in the 80’s.
Apparently she’s Canadian, so not sure if this video really takes place in Memphis or Mississippi or if this is just somewhere outside Toronto. Anyway, I liked the juxtaposition of the Cadillac, the horse and the old shack.
