We’ve come to the end of the month. 2015 is our final year. Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” is our final song.
I’m an unabashed T-Swift fan but find many (most?) of her lyrics are kind of embarrassing. It pretty much started with “Love Story” where she uses the Romeo/Juliet duality but the songs ends happily with the kids getting the dad’s ok and them getting married. THAT’S NOT HOW ROMEO AND JULIET WORKS!
“Blank Space” is largely about jealousy and the concept of women being “crazy” in relationships. Supposedly this is Swift’s attempt to poke fun at the way she is frequently portrayed in the media regarding her own relationships.
I generally just find jealousy to be such a weird emotion that we tend to glamorize in our society. Jealousy is obviously a natural emotion and it’s good to feel – it means you care about something/someone. But too often we teach each other that jealousy should be used as a tool to try to control someone or act out against them. This song, while theoretically satirical on the subject, plays into this idea full-on. And I wonder in what ways Swift’s largely young female audience process this.
That being said, the song and video does a terrific job capturing this fucked-up jealous relationship dynamic. The lyrics “Who is she? I get drunk on jealousy / But you’ll come back each time you leave / Cause darling I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream” are so good. And Swift, who usually seems to play such a sweetheart girl-next-door in her videos does a good version of “crazy” in the video. Her face when she sings “Oh no” and then when she drops his cellphone in the fountain? Golden.
Also, there is this awkward bit of backup vocals in the last chorus where she sings “leave a nasty scar” in this slow staccato way. When we hear this song, Emma will frequently sing that bit loud and proud — LEAVE..A…NAS…TEE…SCAR. Love it.
Day 30 = 2014 and we have Pitbull (featuring Kesha) doing “Timber“.
This is a great pop/dance song featuring harmonica and square dance calls. You don’t get too many of those. There’s a couple questionable lyrics, i.e. “she says she won’t but I bet she will”, but overall its a pretty fun song full of Pitbull’s various braggadocio and somewhat non-sensical lyrics (“We about to clown. Why? Because it’s about to go down”)
The video is kind of insane. You have this lumberjack theme in the lyrics, but the video alternately takes place in a Wild West style saloon, on a farm or what appears to be some Caribbean island. Pitbull is wearing a suit throughout, including a hot pink jacket in one segment, except for a few split seconds where he is shirtless. Lots of ladies’ butts in Daisy Dukes.
My co-worker Mike can’t really stand Pitbull. Apparently Mike does Zumba and they often use Pitbull songs (or songs featuring Pitbull) and he finds Pitbull’s “raps” rather half-assed and annoying. On New Year’s Eve, Emma and I came home after going to see a movie and discovered that Pitbull had his own New Year’s special on TV, which of course we watched. I tagged Mike on Facebook making sure he knew about this and he responded:
Did he start the new year with one of his signature “raps”?
Yeah. Mr. Worldwide. New Year. Yeah. New Ear. Yeah. Mr. Worldwide. 2016. Sixteen. Teen. Twenty. Sixteen. Two Numbers. Yeah. Mr. Worldwide.
Part of the reason I love both Mike and Mr. Worldwide.
2013. I got the abomination of a song “Harlem Shake” by Baauer.
I knew about the internet meme based around this song but had no idea that this song actually went to #1 after that meme broke. FOR FIVE WEEKS! Crazy.
Don’t really like this song. Never really got the meme. But when visiting my family for Thanksgiving last year, Emma started a dance-off with my two youngest nephews. They put on the “Harlem Shake” song and at the breakdown part the youngest nephew leaned back, rolled his eyes back in his head and shook in a way that suggested demonic possession. Luckily Emma caught this dance-off on video with her phone.
For today’s drawing, you get a look at my possessed nephew.
2012. Katy Perry with “Part of Me“.
I was initially turned off by her Christian music background going into “I Kissed A Girl”, which just seemed so weird. And I just really found that song annoying. But then she pulled me in with “Hot n Cold” which is just a great pop song. Reviews of subsequent songs were mixed. Not a big fan of “California Gurls”, “Teenage Dream”, “E.T.”, but really like “Part of Me” and “Firework”.
The video for “Part of Me” follows a narrative of girl finds out boy is cheating, girl breaks up with boy, girl decides to join the Marines, girl gets super tough and burns the pathetic letters the boy sends her. Lots of footage of Katy looking pretty tough and doing basic training stuff. The video does seem a little pandering to an “All-American girl” vibe but overall I enjoy it.
Drawing camouflage clothing without spending all day on it and only using two colors of ink is tough. This shit looks like some crazy disco pants.
For 2011 we get local. Wiz Khalifa (whose name I misspell on the drawing) and his single “Black and Yellow” Kinda thought this song was super corny when it came out and then it grew on me. Song is catchy and fun, though most of the lyrics are still pretty whatever.
The video is a fun watch. Love seeing Pittsburgh on TV, in movies and in music videos. My drawing once again makes someone look much beefier than they really are. And that Terrible Towel he’s waving kinda looks like some crazy scimitar.
We’re almost there.
So today is 2010. The song is “Like A G6” by the Far East Movement. This song is one of those ones that I find highly annoying yet also highly addictive and actually kinda fun. Lyrics like “Popping bottles in the ice, like a blizzard / When we drink we do it right gettin slizzard / Sippin sizzurp in my ride, like Three 6 / Now I’m feeling so fly like a G6” are hella dumb but also pretty fun to say. This video just ups the annoying factor.
Anyway, a G6 is a type of private jet and I guess they are supposed to be “fly”, but I find it hard to imagine getting too excited about a private jet. Every time I hear some reference to a “G6” in a song, I think of the Pontiac G6. The Pontiac version of the G6 was an economical mid-sized sports car, heir to the throne of the Pontiac Grand Am. Not a bad car really, but nothing too fancy.
2009 – Lady Gaga – “Poker Face”
Earlier in the year Gaga’s first single “Just Dance” would hit #1 for a few weeks. At first I really couldn’t get into that song and didn’t find much interesting about Gaga, but then “Poker Face” came along and changed that. I really dug this song (and the video) and this prompted me to go back and give “Just Dance” another shot. “Poker Face” would only be #1 for one week before the Black Eyed Peas took control of the #1 spot for TWENTY-SIX WEEKS! 12 weeks with “Boom Boom Pow” and then 14 with “I Gotta Feeling”. Pure insanity.
Love Gaga’s weird outfits, robot dance moves and potential Illuminati references. My drawing today makes her look like some bulked up He-Man/She-Ra/Thundercats reject.
